Our backyard does not get shade except in the morning. It is very dry and hot back there. The only plants I can get to grow are monkey grass and dianthus (very beautiful pink, red, purple and white varieties). The best part is these plants are very low maintenence and they are perinneals so they come back every year. These plants don't require much water at all. Hope this helps.

Coleus, Perennial Salvia, Day Lily, & Sunflowers.
Marigolds, Petunias, and Begonias- these three need water about every other day.
Usually the flowers you buy will give general info. on their exposure (Sun, Shade, or Semi)
and how much water they prefer. Typically newly planted flowers need more water until their roots get established and then Mother Nature can take care of them from there. If it continues to rain every week, don't worry about watering if the roots have gotten established, otherwise water a couple of times per week.
