Easy Black Forest Cake
Easy Black Forest Cake

This is how I usually make it for my family.

2 large cans of cherry pie filling
1 box of chocolate cake mix, and all of the ingredients you need for that cake
2 tubs of Cool Whip
1/3 cup of powdered sugar

First, bake the chocolate cake per its directions, in 2 9" pans. Let it cool, then cut both cakes in half horizontally so that you have 4 layers. Crumble one of the layers into a bowl, so that you have 3 left.

Mix Cool Whip and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl on high, until the Cool Whip gets kind of stiff. This is easier if you make sure that the Cool Whip is very cold, and you can also refrigerate the mixing bowl and beaters, too.

Spread Cool Whip over the first layer of the cake, then spoon some of the cherries over it. Add a layer of cake, then more Cool Whip and cherries, then the third, with more Cool Whip. Don't forget to leave enough for the sides!

After everything is covered in the Cool Whip, use the crumbled cake layer to sprinkle all over the cake.
