Just finished using Time Machine to restore my computer. It took four hours, but everything is exactly as it was at the time of the crash. What an awesome application.

It was just a defective drive on my wife's work computer which get on average 14 hours of use per day. I have yet to, and I hope to never see a virus but I am sure I eventually will.

Very good job on thinking ahead ... I back up to SATA drive in an eclosure myself which I only switch on for the backup..
Do you know what caused the drive to fail out? Old age, virus. full to capacity? What?

It took 20+ years of computer to use to experience my first major problem with a computer but it happened yesterday. I had a fatal hard drive crash. Everything gone. Professional recovery would be required.
At the first of the year I got on a major backup kick. I started backing up through Time Machine, Mozy an external drive and I even bought a Drobo. I had never backed-up before.
Luckily I was able to move my time machine drive to a second computer and was up and running again within minutes and I don't have to recover the drive. i just get a new drive installed and restore the computer back to the way it ran on Thursday night with Time Machine.
I write this to stress the importance of backing up your documents and pics. I can't imagine losing everything without having these backups.
