No torrents themselves are not illegal. Never have been. Never will be. Using the ISO or image file from a torrent to by pass paying for an upgrade could be. Depending on multiple factors. The most important being is the owner of the device entitled to the update?
However seeing how the owner of the device is asking how to due update it this is just a means to an end. In other words the image is a publicly available to owners of the device and and as such is covered under the EULA,.
A publicly available file is not an illegal activity. Using it to bypass paying for an update form Garmin would be. Also if I offered, which I am not, to due this procedure for a fee and by passed paying Garmin that would be illegal.
I simply provided a source of information, its the owners choice what he does with it..

Isn't that pretty much illegal considering you're getting the update for free via *torrent* instead of using the actual express software contained here http://software.garmin.com/...press.html and supporting Garmin.
Pretty sure the use of illegal activity is prohibited in here.

It is a Garmin 255w. It does not have lifetime updates. I think they are $89 on the Garmin website. Any suggestions?

What type of Garmin GPS do you have? Also doesn't it come with free updates?
