Fiddle & Bow Presents John Gorka

Public Event · by FiddleandBow

Friday, Dec. 5, 2014

John Gorka is one of the most popular and highly respected songwriters of the American folk scene. A native of New Jersey, John's early exposure to top folk songwriters came when he lived in the basement of Godfrey Daniels, the legendary folk club in Bethlehem, PA during the late 70's. He also worked as MC and sound man. While there he heard the likes of Stan Rogers, Eric Andersen, Tom Paxton, and Claudia Schmidt. He began making trips to New York City where he drew inspiration and education from songwriter Jack Hardy's Fast Folk songwriting circle. In 1984 he won the prestigious New Folk Award at the Kerrville Folk Festival and in 1987 he recorded his first album on Red House Records, one of the top folk labels. In 1989 he switched to Will Ackerman's (founder of Windham Hill Records) High Street label and recorded 5 albums over the next 7 years. In 1998 he returned to Red House Records where he has remained. In 2007 he released "John Gorka - The Gypsy Life" a career retrospective DVD on AIX Records.

John's songs have been recorded by other top artists including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black, and Maura O'Connell. His latest album is "Bright Side of Town" released this year. A consummate performer, John's outstanding songwriting, warm baritone vocals, instrumental skills, and engaging stage presence make for and evening of very high quality entertainment. Don't miss him!
