It sounds like your capacitor may have went bad. The best way to test this is to turn on the unit, go outside and use a stick or other similar object and use it to spin the fan hard.. if the fan stays spinning then it is the capacitor. Basically all it does it kick start the fan. We had this happen to ours last year, we started ours like this several times before calling an AC company and realizing it was only an $8 part. my husband was able to replace it himself. here is a troubleshooting website.it also explains that if there is a humming noise but the fan isnt going to try the stick method. http://inspectapedia.com/ai...denser.htm

I am sure your heater ran quite a bit last night and with the cold and the heat, condensation built up and there is a possibility that the condensation froze around the gear that turns the fan.

Yesterday the car, today the heat pump. They usually come in threes.
Call A1 Heating & A/C 927-2999 (I think!). Sounds like the fan has gone out.

So I turned my heat on this morning when I got home from work (shea said it had been making a weird noise)
When I turned it on I went to the outside unit and everything seemed to be working properly so I waited 10 minutes and checked the unit again. My fan wasn't running but there was a hum coming from the outdoor unit and some steam rising from the fan.
I know they go into defrost mode (they're supposed to anyway) Could my defrost mode be F'ed up? Anyway Shea said it was making a loud noise but I never heard that, just a low hum
