We did use an oil base paint. Can't remember about the primer though.

Talk to the person at the paint store first. If it's been painted they have heard the stories, good and bad. But as for the suggestions. Definitely prime. Kilz is a very good product, the Kilz I used was oil based. Remember if you want it to last do it right. I had a professional painter to tell me almost fifty years ago, "If you want to do it right use paint like it is the cost of water."

You will want to prime but use a primer made for fiberglass. This is a plug for Sherwin Williams but I know what I'm talking about. Use their multipurpose zero voc primer (prob a qt for one door) and use all surface enamel latex topcoat. It will work like a champ as long as the door is clean (good degreaser) before hand. Good luck!

Oil based kiltz? We're wanting to paint it black. Would semi gloss be best?

We painted ours a dark green with outside paint...did primer first. Turned out nicely and has stayed on for over 10 years now.

We're thinking of painting our front door. It's fiberglass but looks like stained wood. It's showing its age and is fading. Does anyone know what kind of paint would work best? High gloss, semi-gloss? Prime before paint or not? Thanks.
