they both make a horrible mess unless you get someone that knows "exactly: what they are doing and you are right it will not match I have gone thru this and it is a horrible experience. I finally ended up going to a hardware store and purchased the new very think ceiling tiles that come in pretty designes you have no mess and it doesn't take long to do good luck

I would spray it, you can have to paint tinted just a tiny bit to match the old paint. Rolling will just make a mess.

This is related to my previous post about a leak in ceiling. After we fix it I would like to paint the ceiling. I know to buy some kiltz to cover the stain, but what is the best way to paint a popcorn ceiling? I have seen other people paint theirs with a roller and it took off the popcorn and when they sprayed on more you could tell it was a patch job. It just doesn't look the same. I guess rolling it on wets it too much and takes off the stuff. Will spraying do the same or is that the best way to paint a ceiling to keep from taking off sections of popcorn.
