Mommy, I understood your reference to Grubb having worked for Dean Smith as a trainer/waterboy. And yes, Coach Dean Smith would be embarrassed, not because of the won-lost record, but because of how the players are treated. Heck, Let Laura Foster coach both the varsity boys and girls. Her players respect her. She is tough, but she treats her players with respect.
Is Daniel Waln still looking for a coaching job? Now, that is a thought !!
And oh yea, why did Assistant Coach Dwight Furches stop coaching for Grubb??

The Ashe County School system should consider themselves very fortunate to have had Marc Payne as a coach there. I consider him to be one of if not the best basketball coaches in Northwest NC in the last 40 years, but he has said that time is over. If I understood correctly, he stepped down due to health reasons. For the schools that are fortunate enough to have a coach of that quality, and we were also with Bill Jarrett, it presents a difficult time for the person that has to replace them. But it has to happen, and we have to move on to the future. I imagine that coach Payne and all his years of knowledge is available to coach grubb, and I am sure that coach Grubb takes full advantage of that fact. Basketball success at Ashe County is not over, it has just hit a bump in the road, and I find it hard to believe that changing coaches every time you finish in the middle of the conference for a couple of years will help get you back to where you want to be.
Help him, support him, give him a chance without a constant cloud of negativity and see what happens.

Ashehuskies07. You are exactly right, I am an Alleghany fan and proud to be so. I can assure you that I had no part in getting rid of coach McKnight a few years back. It was one of the single biggest mistakes that I have saw made by our school system in a long time. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they did realize that they had made a mistake and corrected it as quickly as was possible. And yes u are exactly right I did work as hard as I could to get rid of his replacement, but your analogy does not make a lot of sense, and the situation that you refer to is exactly what I am referring to. The administration made a mistake, and let a good man and a good coach go, and it blew up on them. I am afraid that getting rid of coach grubb would be a very similar mistake. And I would hate to see that happen.
At the end of the day, I am an Alleghany fan and it will not hurt me either way, but I have always saw our two schools as sister schools, and I would hate to see the same mistake made there that we made and were fortunate enough to be able to correct. Be patient, work for your coach not against him. You might see a difference in the results. Alleghany made a mistake and then corrected it and gave him the support that he needed. He paid the system and the community back with a conference championship and a conference coach of the year. Give grubb that support before you make the mistake and see if it pays off for you, because believe me the saying about " the devil you know may be better than the one you dont" sure turned out to be true for the Trojans and I fear that it would for you as well.

Grubb needs to go! We the community despise him and what he has done to the basketball program. Let that list of replacements get filled up!

OldBlueRidge- I know your an Alleghany fan, and hope you didn't support getting rid of Tommy in the first place but didn't Alleghany remove Coach McKnight in favor of Phillips. Weren't you and some others trying to get Phillips removed? Whats the difference in us trying to get Grubb out???

To be honest, I think Dean Smith would be embarrassed by most if not all of the coaches that coach today, and that would be unfair on his part. Coaches are working and stretching to get the most out of their players in a time when it is very hard to do so. Todays kid is a different kid to coach than their parents were. Todays kid is naturally less likely to have a respect for authority, and Mom and Dad make it worse because of the negative comments that they are constantly throwing around. The generations that came before were groomed in gyms by their coaches and most complaints from the kid were met with "Well I guess you just need to work a little harder if you want more playing time" or "If you want the coach to like you then you need to give him a reason to" todays complaints from our kids, and yes I am talking about myself as well, would be met with " Well he doesn't know what he is talking about" or "its just politics" or "I wish they would get rid of him"
Not meaning to throw water on your coach is the problem fire, but unless you have coached todays kid, you have no idea what its like. And I am not talking about their rec ball teams or their AAU teams. I am talking about coaching at the varsity level today where you are expected to win and everyone expects their kid to be the star whether he is or is not capable of being a star.

Oldblueridge... I don't know who the replacement would be, maybe Rob Sanders who coaches at Watauga or even Payne takes it back over. I'm not sure who the replacement would be but regardless it needs to happen!

Well, Grubb may be technically sound; however, he cannot, and has not, been able to motivate the players. They hate him, and the way Grubb treats them! Yes, Mark Payne yelled at the players, but he would then, "emotionally pick them up," making the players feel good about themselves. The players loved him, and more importantly, the players respected Mark Payne, and Payne was successful year after year. Recently I overheard someone ask an existing player why Grubb was wearing a brace on his wrist; the player just shook his head and said that Grubb hurt his wrist, "Patting himself on the back!"
Coach Dean Smith would be embarrassed by Grubb's actions! His time has come... get rid of the bum!
Let him go back to teaching Drivers' Education.

Just curious what coach grubb does that is so bad, and who his replacement would be. From an outsiders perspective, I think he has his kids playing hard and smart. I think there are some teams in the conference right now that are just more talented. Sorry. He puts the time in. He can be seen all over the conference scouting which allows him to be a good game planner, and to be honest I see him as one of the top game planners in the conference. I really think that you guys should be pleased to have a coach of his caliber at your school. Good coaches will not always win but they will always work hard and make sure that their kids play hard smart basketball, and that is exactly what this opponents fan sees coach grubb doing.
