now take the icon and drag it from the desktop to the task bar

That just gives me a second icon of Word on my screen. Do not put it in the task bar.

right click the program (what you click to run word) select create shortcut to desktop

This may be a dumb question. How can I add an icon for Word to my task bar so that I don't have to go to the startup screen each time I want it?
