Gemini I am suspecting that you do have a virus. I would suggest downloading Security Essentials, its free and does a better job than AVG or Advast( my opinion and that of PC Magazine and Maximum PC magazine). After you download it, you will need to remove all other anti virus programs(Security Essential will not work if other Anti-virus programs are loaded. Unfortunately both AVG and Advast can be hard to remove. Hopefully you will not run into trouble. Do not remove AVG or Advast before you download Security Essentials only after the download and just before you start to install Sec Essentials.

Gemini You either have a virus on your computer or an antivirus conflict. If you still have Norton on your system(weither you are using it or not), this maybe the problem. Norton will cause problems if it is loaded on a system with other anti-virus programs. A lot of antivirus programs with not work with other anti-virus programs. If you still have Norton on your system, use the add/remove program in the control panel to remove Norton. Also remove advast. AVG is a decent antivirus program but sometimes it will conflict with AVG. Once you have removed those 2 programs try running AVG again. If you still have the problem, then most likely you have a virus. If you plan to use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer I would recommend that you drop AVG too and use Microsoft Security Esssentials. AVG usually works well with Firefox but it doe not do a good job with Chrome and IE.

Here is a link to download it free:

Gemini did you try using a different Web Browser?

Also what Anti-Virus program are you using?

When was the last time that you checked for updates for Vista?

Cynic, like I said ealier the problem can arise from from several things. Right now I would say that a virus or spyware is less likely. Google Chrome is know to have problems with Facebook, especially if your using any of the Facebook aps or games. Right now I am thinking that it is a Google Chrome issue or Malware. Malware is also know to cause conflicts with Facebook. Due to the fact that Gemini says it only happens when trying to go onto Facebook, most likely it is a Web Browser problem. A virus is a possibility, but it would depend on which anti virus program Gemini is using. If Gemini is using Norton, then the problem is Norton. Norton, Google Chrome and Facebook do not play well together. It is hard to make a true determination without seeing the computer and what programs are loaded.

Facebook is terrible for viruses and spyware. They literally do nothing to prevent them. You should never watch a video on Facebook, or install any of the apps; they're pretty much all viruses.

Reformatting wouldn't remove a boot sector virus, so that doesn't rule it out. HamptonWiz's advice is spot-on; scan for spyware, then download Avast Free or AVG Antivirus and scan for viruses (you can find links to these at http://www.gowilkes.com/tech/).

Try using a different web browser. If you don't have one, download firefox and try it. If that does not work, you most likely have either a mal-ware or a program conflict.

You said the computer has been reformatted, did you go to microsofts website and download the latest patches?
