Thanks for your help, we exchanged the stereo today and it still doesn't work so we're going to try your other suggestion tomorrow. We're about to run out of tricks to try. I guess we will cross our fingers and see how it goes. thanks for all your help.

Your son and I actually just discussed this yesterday:

He said that you have sound on FM, but not on CD. If this is true, then the first thing to do is run a stronger ground from the stereo to the chassis of the vehicle (making the wire as short as you can), but it's more likely that you have a defective stereo.
If you have the stereo out of the dash, then you might also want to run a wire directly from the stereo to one of the speakers. There's a chance that one of the speakers are poorly grounded, and the CD player takes more power than the FM radio. This is a bit more of a long shot, but it's still possible.

my son has a 94 jeep cherokee, we bought him a sony stereo with 4 speakers for christmas. the back speakers wont fit but the front two will. also the radio works but the cd player and the mp3 thingy wont work. we think we have all the wire hooked up right. any suggestions. could it be because we dont have the new speakers hooked up and still using the old ones in the back. Just asking I know it sounds dumb but were desperate at this point and I feel so sorry for my son, he was so looking forward to this. any help would be appreciated
