First I would select a price range. Then I would select via its screen size. Personally I have seen some new laptops with 17.3 WLED screens, they look good. However most travel bags are desinged around the 15.6 screen size laptops.Next you should consider battery life.
As far as hardware its been standardized pretty well for windows 7.
Lastly make sure you can upgrade your warranty period before the manufactures 1 year expires. HP seems to make a good ones from my personal experience

I would suggest going to best buy. They have a very knowledgeable staff when it comes to laptops and they should be able to help you pick out the perfect one!

I have returned to graduate school and need a new laptop. I will mainly use it for writing papers and research. Any suggestions or a brand I use stay away from.
