Actually, HDMI is very complicated, and with the handshaking required for it to work, there are many problems that could cause it to not work properly. The computer settings is just one of a hundred different things that could cause such problems. So keep that in mind if changing the computer settings doesn't work for you.

If you have an HDMI cable from your computer to the tv and can't get sound to the tv here is the solution. Go to the Control Panel - Sound and make the HDMI the default.The problem will be solved. When you disconnect the HDMI, the speakers will go back to being the default.
