I wasn't born in the south. I'm not a Baptist or even a Christian. I had good parents and I hate democrats. Why?
Because I've lived in several states and in large democrat controlled cities. Their policies are horrible and they don't work. They perpetuate the slave class by means of a welfare state while lining their pockets.

Big difference between historic conservatism/classic liberalism and Trumpism. One is based in an actual ideological framework, the other is a personality cult void of any systematic ideological and moral principles(there's a concrete word for that, starts with an f, or P if you're an Argentine, j if you're North Korean). It's not surprising at all that the ignorant and bigoted poor and uneducated consider him Godlike. Don't be fooled though, there's nothing patriotic about idolatry. The irony runneth thick when you consider Christofascists worship a false idol. It's not that they're evil so much as they fall prey to evil. Robespierre would be shaking his head if he had one.

Pre-LBJ the south was predominately Democrat, the antithesis of Republican, the party of Lincoln. After LBJ gave the G......d N.....s equal rights most Southern "Democrats" became Republicans. Are Republicans evil? Well they grabbed onto the coattails of an evil individual in their eagerness to gain control of congress. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt by saying "they thought they'd control him when he became president." As was the case in Germany in the 1930's with Hitler, it was Trump that took control. The Republicans are evil by association and their refusal to admit that they were wrong by putting Trump in control.

I've thought about this question a lot. I think the south have a different type of Conservatives. The hard-core Baptist religion was wide spread in the south, some alcoholic parents, lots of inbreeding. They grow up with a chip on their shoulders, blaming the big bad wolf, Democrats.
