Perhaps some common ground Antithesis?
Do you support the Trump administrations push to ban welfare people from soda?
I want to point out again that this has nothing to do with Trump... several governors are the ones pushing this change. This ban was presented during Trump's first administration, too, but it was denied "because of the added cost to administer the restrictions."
Soda has apparently always been covered with SNAP, dating back to the Food Stamp Act of 1964. I didn't know that.
With that said, I agree with the
general concept of not covering candy and soda by EBT, yes.
But as I said, how do they define "soft drink" or "candy?" If it's based on the quantity of sugar then it wouldn't apply to diet soda. But it could apply to milk, for example, which contains 12g of sugar in an 8 ounce serving.
Would the new rule mean that white bread is no longer covered, but whole grain bread is?
A bowl of breakfast cereal has about as much sugar as a slice of cake... would cereal no longer be covered?
What about table sugar?
Your body can't tell the difference between white flour or the starch in white potatoes from sugar... would they also be banned?
Do we ban anything with a Glycemic Index higher than a certain number... including cooking ingredients?
I'm sure that you can see where I'm going with this... if they want to enforce a healthy diet then that's fine, but it goes a lot further than vague general terms that are essentially meaningless. They would need to change the whole thing to only cover fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, nuts, meat, and whole grain bread... but then the cost per person would be about 4 times higher, and I'm not sure that people will accept a higher tax rate to cover it.
