America's adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party, are targeting our nation's students by stealing research, spewing anti-American propaganda, and censoring free speech by providing American academic institutions with lucrative funding opportunities. Too often, schools fail to report these foreign gifts and funding, leaving our adversaries with an unchecked influence over U.S. academic institutions. President Trump While the President is limited in what he can do through executive order, I am proud to introduce legislation The DETERRENT Act significantly lowers the reporting threshold to increase transparency and closes loopholes that currently exist in federal law. It also imposes new penalties for institutions that try to secretly take money from the CCP and other adversaries, including fines and the loss of their Title IV funding. The good news is the House of Representatives recently passed this important legislation. I look forward to making sure the Senate also takes this bill up soon so we can get it to President Trump's desk and signed into law.
